TUNA, Tuna, tuna video

Another great day offshore on Tuesday, 3 July 07.  Gathered up a crew for SeaDuction consisting of me Fish Dad, Lanie, Mike K, Joe, and Doug.  Over-nighted at Rudee Inlet Station Marina Monday evening to put us closer to the action and avoid running through the bay at night.  Departed at 4 am from Rudee and headed east.  Light SE winds with a left over easterly swell but not too bad a ride.  Some of the charter boats I talked to Monday evening caught YFT at Wayne's World so we put our our spread at 6:30 am in 75 degree hot water and trolled towards the canyon.  Found some remnants of a weedline at the tip of the canyon and worked it for an hour without a bump so we headed into the Canyon to work the south wall and the water cools to 71-72 degrees with bait marks in the area.  Never seen the canyon so smooth.  Not a breath of wind all day.

About 9 am 3 lines go down with 2 staying tight.  Reels are just screaming not wanting to slow down.  Joe and Mike K jump on the rods.  We know these are some quality tunas so we put them both in harnesses for a long fight.  About 15 minutes later Joe gets his along side the boat in view, big YFT almost to the surface.  As soon as the leader man starts to leader him in the tuna says "no way" and makes a surge breaking off the mainline and he was gone.  Our hearts sank but Mike K is still on his tuna and getting close.  This one is not giving up either and finally get him to the boat and sink the steel in his head.  Nice 65 lb YFT.

OK so we are 1 for 3 but we have good marks and the tuna are on the surface feeding now.  After another hour of working the south wall, we get our only single hit all day.  Again, drag is screaming and other quality fish hooked up.  Doug gets in the harness and works this fish for about 20 minutes.  We get him to the surface and see it's another 60 lb class fish but he also makes his final death run and breaks off.  Dang....1 for 4.  I know this lesson but I guess I'm going to have to re-learn again....we need to have the angler back off on the drag for the death run.  OK...I got it now.  I think it's burned into my brain cells.  I won't forget this again.

Another 2 hours go by and noon is approaching but we still are marking in the same general area so we keep working it.  2 lines go down so I grab one and Joe grabs the other.  I tell Joe any angler that loses 2 fish has to clean the boat by himself.  I get mine to the boat quickly and we boat a 25 lb YFT.

Joe's a little bigger and takes him 15 minutes or so to get him along side the boat.  We are done losing tuna at this point and we get him into the boat this time.  Nice 45 lb YFT.

Still have decent marks at noon so we keep drilling the area but trolled until 3 pm without a hit.  Work our way to the tip to 75 degree water and onto Wayne's World without a bump so we pull lines and head home going 3 for 8 for the day flying the tuna flag.

The tuna all had 9 inch squid in their belly which explains why they liked my 9 inch squid daisy chain.

Not a bad day on the water.  Slick calm seas with the exception of some inshore chop from the CLT on in.

I'm ready to go again.  Got some video from the day, hope you enjoy.
